Hip Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is one of the most common medical problems we deal with in the dog. Each week we see patients in our office, young and old, medium-sized and large breeds, purebred and mutts, whom we diagnose with hip dysplasia. Some cases are mild and no treatment is needed. Some are so severe and the dogs so arthritic that the owners must contemplate euthanasia.

There are a lot of theories about what causes hip dysplasia, many of them incorrect. My goal is to educate you as to what hip dysplasia is, how it occurs, what can be done to prevent it, and how it can be treated. Unfortunately, not all of your questions can be answered. There are some things we still simply do not know. But I'll do my best to keep you informed on new findings that occur in this exciting new millennium.
