What do I need for my new kitten?

Kittens are generally easy to prepare for. Here is a quick checklist of things you want to have on hand when bringing the new family member home:

Litter. Litter most commonly comes in two general forms. Regular clay litter and the clumpable kind. I recommend starting out with two litter boxes, one with regular litter and one with the clumpable/scoopable kind. In a few days your kitten will show which kind he or she prefers. And remember, your house looks very large to a little kitten, so be sure you place the litter boxes strategically so the kitten will have easy access.

Food. Your best bet is to purchase whatever food the shelter has been feeding the kitten. Continue this diet until you consult with your veterinarian. The less change initially the better. Ceramic or stainless steel bowls are better than plastic, as they will cause less skin irritation.

·Water. You'll need a water bowl, filled with fresh water at all times. Avoid the plastic bowls. Tap water is fine. Bottled water is nice, but usually not necessary.

·Toys: Any kind of commercial cat toy available at the shelter or local pet store is acceptable. That's it. Those are all the necessities.
